When it comes to achieving a flawless finish in any painting project, especially with high-quality products like Fine Paints of Europe preparation is everything. Recently, we embarked on an extensive hours-long journey of sanding to ensure that every surface was perfectly prepped for the stunning transformation ahead.

The key to a successful paint application lies in the details, and we focused on two main areas: the intricate grooves of the ceiling and the various surfaces that would be treated. Here’s a glimpse into the meticulous process:

Sanding the Ceiling Grooves: The grooves in the ceiling can easily become a challenge if not properly prepped. We dedicated significant time to sanding these areas, ensuring that all imperfections were smoothed out and that the surface was even. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also allows the varnish to adhere better, resulting in a more durable finish.

Surface Preparation: Each surface requires its own unique approach. We removed the old weathered coating, cleaned the surface, filled cracks, applied a sealer that helps to level the grain. This step is crucial—an uneven surface can lead to an uneven finish, which is the last thing anyone wants when using such exquisite paints. We then applied 4 coats of fine paints marine varnish!

When it comes to acquiring flawless, long lasting finishes, it’s not all about the pretty finished photos. There’s a tremendous amount of ugly process in between that happens to complete such perfection.

As you can see in this photo five of our hard-working team members are following our prep procedures…

Slightly abbreviated for you…

☐ 1. Greet homeowners & introduce yourself
☐ 2. Verify scope, colors, finishes & create project plan
☐ 3. Check for previous damages to surfaces & document in app
☐ 4. Label Paint Cans per surface
☐ 6. Establish staging area / shop
☐ 7. Protect surfaces & work space including landscape
☐ 8. Remove downspouts/fixtures and label accordingly
☐ 9. Set up ladders safely
☐ 10. Scrape loose paint
☐ 11. Vac all areas clean
☐ 12. Set up pressure washer w/ cleaning solution, wash as needed from top down
☐ 13. Allow proper dry time - pre check surface w/ moisture meter
☐ 14. Protect work area
☐ 15. Sand all surfaces 220-150 grit by hand/ power per spec
☐ 16. Apply 1 spot coat or full tinted oil prime to seal wood-per scope 17. Apply caulking to trims, cracks, gaps

We recommend using @benjaminmoore Moore products though you MUST ensure it has an LRV (light reflective value) of 55 or above, and it must be an exterior 100% acrylic latex paint. Using the wrong products can cause Azek to overheat, leading to undesirable and irreversible defects such as warping or buckling. Just don’t do it!

Let’s talk about why we yield against painting in the heat and humidity.

Well friends when the weather is too hot (especially in direct sunlight), the paint dries before it can fully bind, leading to premature failure. When paint dries too fast, the binders and pigments can’t interlock, and the protective paint film may not be as durable or flexible. The high temperatures & humidity stop the paint from binding properly, which means it can peel, crack, bubble, blister, lift from the surface and discolor. Too much heat can cause the surface of the paint to skin over well before the bottom layers have a chance to dry. Temps up to 85 and up to a 70-percent humidity level are the maximum levels we recommend.

For example if temps will be 90 degrees / 90% humidity at noon then painting should be completed by 6am to give the paint ample time to cure correctly before the high temps and humidity arrive. Who wants to paint in the dark at 3am… Am I right?!

Following the shade is just as important which prevents flashing. (Visible UN-SEXY marks)
It’s best to wait on better weather conditions to assure you will have success!

Masking Liquid H2O, is a clear, water-based coating that we use as a paint masking product on glass surface’s . We apply by brushing, spraying, or rolling. It’s awesome for painting glass surfaces such as French doors, as it eliminates the need for taping off each piece of glass. Yay!

Why are we painting with the lights off?

Painting with lights off makes it much easier to clearly view the ceiling’s wet, dry, and missed (holidays) areas in natural light.
It also keeps those bright lights and glare out of your eyes. Which also makes things easier to see.

When we paint smooth ceilings, we roll parallel to the main source of natural light to prevent roller lines. (Ropes or roping) Rolling perpendicular to the light source can cause shadows. Boo

Our secret to a lasting deck coating or any coating for that matter…. THIS moisture meter. When the substrate reads below 20% moisture content, we know it’s ready to apply our topcoat with proper adhesion for a lasting finish.
